Breastfeeding vs. Formula Feeding: Understanding Volume Differences
One of the most common surprises for new parents is that breastfed babies and formula-fed babies do not follow the exact same volume trajectory after the first month:
Breast milk changes dynamically in caloric density and immunological composition over time. Because of this, breastfed infants generally plateau at 25 to 30 oz daily between months 1 and 6 without needing larger bottle volumes.
Formula has a consistent caloric density. As formula-fed infants gain weight, their intake increases steadily, usually peaking around 30 to 32 oz daily before tapering slightly as solid foods are established.
